A square block of nine small stones sits in the middle, and the pavé halo rings it without touching, so there is an open gap of air between the centre and the outer circle. The halo edge is scalloped where each stone bulges out, which softens what would otherwise be a hard ring. The gap is the whole trick here, it makes a small stud read as two separate pieces of light rather than one solid face. Screw-on backs.
