Full-size round stones are tiered outward and downward in rings, smaller through the middle and larger at the rim, so the face builds into a half sphere rather than sitting flat. Shared prongs hold each stone against its neighbours, which is why the surface reads as continuous stone with only small beads of metal showing. Because it is domed, the light moves across it as you turn instead of flashing all at once. Push-back posts.
