Gold vermeil diamond-cut Cardano chain in sterling silver

What Is a Cardano Chain?

Short version: a Cardano chain is a tight, woven chain. The links overlap so much that it stops looking like links and starts looking like a cord. It feels solid in your hand but it bends easy around your neck. If you've handled a Franco and thought it was a little stiff, a Cardano is that, but softer.

How it's made

Each link is a small curved loop. They get threaded through each other at an angle, so in any little stretch of chain you've got four or five links stacked inside each other. That's why it's round and rope-looking instead of flat. There's nothing open to catch on a sweater.

Ours are diamond-cut, which just means after the chain is built, a machine shaves tiny flat spots onto the outside of the links. Those flat spots throw light. It's why a 2mm Cardano will flash more than a plain 4mm chain. People ask us about that a lot.

Cardano, Franco, box

These three get confused for each other online, so here's the difference the way I'd explain it holding them.

  • Franco is a V weave. Dense, holds a straight line, the stiffest one. It's what you put a heavy pendant on.
  • Cardano has the same dense body but the weave is looser. It settles against your neck instead of standing off it. A touch more sparkle than Franco at the same width because there's more surface for the diamond cut to grab.
  • Box is square links in a straight line. Rigid. Sharp little points of light instead of a glow.

If you want the texture and the shine but Franco feels too rigid, get the Cardano. If you're hanging something heavy on it, don't. Go Franco or rope. We wrote up which chains hold a pendant if you want the long version.

Width and weight

Cardano is a thin-chain style. We carry 2mm and 2.5mm, both 18 inches. The 2mm is about 15 grams, the 2.5 is about 22. That's light enough to forget it's on, heavy enough that you know it isn't hollow when you pick it up.

You won't find a lot of Cardanos over 3mm anywhere. The weave gets chunky fast. If you want wide and woven, you want a rope or a Franco.

Finishes

All of ours are 925 sterling underneath. You can get it plain silver, gold vermeil (real gold over the sterling, not a flash plate on brass), black, or two-tone black and silver. The two-tone is good on this chain specifically, because the diamond cut makes the silver flecks pop against the black.

Being honest about the finishes: anything over silver is a coating. Vermeil and black are thick and they last, but wear it every day and eventually the clasp and the spots that rub will show silver through. That's normal. You can get it re-dipped. The chain under it is still solid sterling either way, which is the part that matters.

Who it's for

It's a cord, not a statement piece. Wear it alone at the collarbone, under a shirt, or as the second chain in a stack. The 2mm is a daily chain for anybody. The 2.5 two-tone has a little more presence without going anywhere near iced-out.

Taking care of it

The weave is tight so it doesn't kink the way a herringbone or a snake will. Still, don't ball it up in a pocket. Lay it flat or hang it. Wipe it after you wear it, keep it out of perfume and pools. Plain silver, a silver cloth brings it back if it tarnishes. If it's plated or black, wipe it, don't polish it.

Questions we get

Is a Cardano the same as a rope chain?

No. Rope is two or more strands twisted together, you can see the spiral. Cardano is one weave with a rounded surface, no twist. From across the room they can look alike. In your hand they don't.

Is it strong?

For its width, yes. All those overlapping links share the load, so it stretches and kinks less than a cable, snake, or herringbone. It's not a pendant chain though. Keep pendants light on it, or use a Franco or rope.

Can I wear it every day?

Yes. The 2mm especially. Take it off for the gym, the shower, the pool. Any finish lasts longer that way.

What length?

18 inches sits just under the collarbone on most people, which is where a thin chain usually wants to be. The chain buying guide has where the other lengths fall.

Everything we have is in the Cardano collection. Compare it to Franco and rope if you're between them.
